Gifted education expert to join College of Education and direct Robinson Center for Young Scholars

Dr. Nancy B. Hertzog will join the ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇøâ€™s College of Education faculty as professor and become director of the Robinson Center for Young Scholars. Dr. Hertzog will come from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she has directed the University Primary School since 1995 and will begin her work at the UW in the fall of 2010.

UW students to volunteer in rural Washington classrooms for an Alternative Spring Break

Each spring, some 50 ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø undergraduates forgo the typical spring break trappings of beaches and flip-flops, choosing instead to volunteer in rural and tribal communities throughout Washington state as part of the UW Pipeline Project’s Alternative Spring Break program.

Anthropology students and Pike Place Senior Center members connect over oral histories

The Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center connects UW classes with community-based organizations so students experience first-hand what they are learning about and so organizations benefit from student service. “Hello in There” looks at Holly Barker’s anthropology class, a reciprocal learning experience for both students and members of the Pike Place Senior Center.

ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø Received National Recognition for Community Service, Named to President’s Honor Roll

The ÂÒÂ×ÉçÇø has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The UW is the only public, 4-year institution in Washington state to receive this recognition this year.
