HISTORIC QUILT: Faculty and staff volunteers from the University of Pittsburgh鈥檚 Greensburg campus have commemorated some of the institution鈥檚 history in a 10-panel quilt. The project began six years ago as a gift idea for a retiring librarian and grew into a quilted time capsule that is now proudly displayed in the school鈥檚 library.
GLOBAL U: The University of Missouri was recently honored for a program that brings an international perspective to higher education in the nation鈥檚 heartland. The Global Scholars program earned the 2002 Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education in the category of Outstanding Faculty Program. The Global Scholars program sends faculty from the university鈥檚 campus to schools around the world. There, they spend an intense two weeks studying a specific academic theme from a different perspective. For example, some of the faculty traveled to Korea where they focused on trade and environmental degradation in the global economy. Another group studied economic transformation and decentralization in China. When they return to campus the professors are expected to revise one of their current courses or develop a new course with an international focus.
CAROLINA GREEN: Experiments with a new recycling program at the University of North Carolina have been so successful that all future construction, renovation and demolition projects will require waste management plans. Such a plan was the bedrock of a recent pilot program that diverted 376 of 440 tons of debris for reclamation. Officials at the university were also surprised to discover that the recycling option ended up being less expensive than using a landfill.
