ADA Digital Accessibility Compliance Deadline Extended

On Monday, April 20, the U.S. Department of Justice announced an extension to the effective date of the ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Rule. The following update from the Digital Accessibility Initiative team is being shared via email with all UW supervisors.

Digital Accessibility Update: Compliance Deadline Extended

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a to the effective date of the ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Rule, moving the deadline from April 24, 2026, to April 26, 2027. The DOJ noted that this extension reflects the time and coordination required to do this work thoughtfully and sustainably.

Even with this extension, the UW continues to have ongoing responsibilities under other federal and state laws and our new digital accessibility policy.

For UW, this additional time allows us to build on current progress, address remaining compliance issues, reduce long‑term legal risk, and further integrate accessibility into everyday operations so that digital accessibility remains a shared responsibility well beyond the compliance date. For academic units, an additional communication will be sent soon to add more clarity.

What this extension means for UW

Over the past two years, the work of the UW community has already driven meaningful, lasting change across the University. The ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Rule has helped accelerate progress that includes the following accomplishments and more:

Looking ahead

UW’s commitment to digital accessibility remains strong and has only been reinforced by our new policy, along with the systems, resources, and tools now in place to support our shared work. Digital accessibility continues to be a priority for our community, and the progress made over the past two years positions UW well to use this additional time effectively and strategically.

Thank you again for your leadership, partnership, and continued commitment to making our digital spaces accessible and inclusive. Over the coming year, please stay connected through the Digital Accessibility website and blog for regular updates, training opportunities, shared resources, and community events.

UW’s New Digital Accessibility Policy (APS 9.0)

The University has approved a new Administrative Policy Statement, . This policy fills an important gap by aligning UW’s long‑standing values regarding accessibility with the federal requirements outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II Rule and comparable Washington State law. APS 9.0 establishes clear, University‑wide expectations for the accessibility of digital content and applications used in UW programs and activities.

Why This Matters

Digital accessibility is both a values commitment and a legal requirement. APS 9.0 requires all digital content and applications used in UW programs and activities to meet the .  When digital accessibility is not addressed, the University faces increased legal, financial, and reputational risk, and members of our community may encounter unnecessary barriers to participation.

Impact on Our Work and the UW Community

APS 9.0 applies to digital content and applications that are acquired, developed, purchased, or used by all UW units across the tri‑campus system and UW Medicine. Under the updated ADA Title II rule, accessibility must be considered early when selecting or creating documents, tools, and workflows. Taking this approach reduces rework, strengthens operations, and supports smoother implementation over time.

UW supports this work through guidance on the Digital Accessibility, Accessible Technologies, and websites, along with tools, training, and expert support to help units meet these expectations. Resources include clear standards for evaluating and selecting digital tools, practical training for creating accessible documents and content, and materials that support review and remediation. Unit‑level experts, Digital Accessibility Liaisons, and central support teams are also available to assist when questions arise or when exceptions are needed.

Additional information about the UW’s efforts is available on the ADA Digital Accessibility Initiative and the Civil Rights Compliance Office websites. If you have questions or would like support, please contact digitalaccess@uw.edu.
