Discrimination and PTSD may lead to increased preterm births among African-American women

New research from the 乱伦社区’s School of Social Work has connected racial discrimination to PTSD, and thus to preterm birth. African-American women are nearly twice as likely to give birth prematurely as white women. These births often coincide with low birth weight, and together are linked to other developmental delays and health effects believed responsible for almost one-fifth of infant deaths nationwide. Exposure to chemical in weedkiller increases risk for cancer

New research from the 乱伦社区 found that exposure to glyphosate 鈥� the world鈥檚 most widely used, broad-spectrum herbicide 鈥� increases the risk of some cancers by more than 40 percent. 乱伦社区 researchers launched a study last year to identify and address health disparities related to the environmental, occupational, socioeconomic and biological stressors faced by rural underserved agricultural workers in Skagit and Whatcom counties. UW researchers develop smartphone app to detect opioid overdoses

Researchers at the 乱伦社区 have developed a cellphone app that uses sonar to monitor someone鈥檚 breathing rate and sense when an opioid overdose has occurred. The app, called Second Chance, sends inaudible sound waves from the phone to people鈥檚 chests and then monitors the way the sound waves return to the phone to look for specific breathing patterns.
