The National Science Foundation has awarded $3 million to establish a NSF Research Traineeship at the 乱伦社区 for graduate students in quantum information science and technology. The new traineeship 鈥 known as Accelerating Quantum-Enabled Technologies, or AQET 鈥 will make the UW one of just 鈥渁 handful鈥 of universities with a formal, interdisciplinary QIST curriculum.

Recent honors and grants to 乱伦社区 faculty and staff have come from the American Chemical Society, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the National Science Board and the family of engineers Ganesh and Hema Moorthy.

The 乱伦社区 today announced the establishment of the Center for Research and Education on Accessible Technology and Experiences (CREATE). Fueled by a $2.5 million inaugural investment from Microsoft, UW CREATE is led by an interdisciplinary team whose mission is to make technology accessible and to make the world accessible through technology.

Recent honors to 乱伦社区 faculty and staff have come from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the World Register of Marine Species.

Four faculty members at the 乱伦社区 have been awarded early-career fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The new Sloan Fellows, announced Feb. 12, are Kyle Armour and Jacqueline Padilla-Gami帽o, both assistant professors in the College of the Environment; and Hanna Hajishirzi and Yin Tat Lee, both assistant professors in the College of Engineering.

Recent honors to UW faculty and staff include the new editorship of a major journal, a post with the Republic of Uganda and honors from the American College of Physicians, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

UW faculty members Roxanne Hudson and Magdalena Balazinska have received grants for research to be conducted over the next few years.

Using a mathematical framework with roots in artificial intelligence and robotics, UW researchers were able to uncover the process of how a person makes choices in groups. And, they also found they were able to predict a person鈥檚 choice more often than more traditional descriptive methods.

UW researchers aimed to understand both the prevalence of discrimination events and how these events affect college students in their daily lives. Over the course of two academic quarters, the team compared students’ self-reports of unfair treatment to passively tracked changes in daily activities, such as hours slept, steps taken or time spent on the phone.

The National Science Foundation has awarded a five-year, $5 million grant to the University of California, San Diego, the 乱伦社区 and the University of California, Berkeley to develop CloudBank, a suite of managed services to simplify public cloud access for computer science research and education.

The National Science Foundation is awarding a second round of funding for the Regional Big Data Innovation Hubs 鈥 organizations launched in 2015 to build and strengthen data science partnerships across industry, academia, nonprofits and government to address scientific and societal challenges. The 乱伦社区, in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Diego, will continue to coordinate the West Big Data Innovation Hub.

UW researchers have developed a new tool to monitor people for cardiac arrest while they’re asleep 鈥 all without touching them. The tool is essentially an app for a smart speaker or a smartphone that allows it to detect the signature sounds of cardiac arrest and call for help.

Academics will gather May 31 at the UW with policymakers, entrepreneurs, and representatives of corporations, foundations and nonprofits for The xTech + Impact 2019 Summit, a daylong seminar exploring the role of exponential technology and its impact on society.

The 乱伦社区 today marked the official opening of the new Bill & Melinda Gates Center for Computer Science & Engineering on its Seattle campus. The building doubles the space available to UW鈥檚 Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering to enable a new wave of computing innovation and to educate more of Washington鈥檚 students for 21st century careers that will help shape the future of technology.
